The digital content market, in Europe and elsewhere, continues to grow rapidly, and there are new application areas emerging on a regular basis. To monitor and observe this constantly changing market has proved difficult, but it is possible that a flexibly organised Digital Content Observatory, without requiring any new fixed structures to operate it, and supported by and with the participation of both the private and public sectors, might be able to achieve this. ERIN is therefore conducting a study on behalf of the Information Society Directorate-General of the European Commission into the feasibility of such a Digital Content Observatory. It has carried out an extensive research and interview programme to provide a body of information and opinion, which will be used as input to the definition of alternative scenarios for the creation of the Observatory. The outcome of the research and interviews are now being analysed and evaluated in detail, which has included its presentation and discussion at a recent dedicated workshop in London, before a final analysis and recommendations are delivered. The results of this study, the Content Observatory Study, will be used to support the presence and use of European digital content products and services on the Global Network, as part of the eEurope action plan. |
